They slip over the pipe, are easy to cut around fittings and bends, and come in sizes matched to standard pipe diameters. They provide effective thermal insulation and some freeze protection for pipes in moderately cold areas like crawl spaces.
For pipes in higher-temperature applications or irregular pipe runs with many bends and connections, fiberglass wrap provides coverage where tube sleeves don’t fit cleanly. It’s also used in wall cavity applications where a tube sleeve won’t fit through the available space.
For pipes in locations where temperatures regularly drop far enough to freeze even insulated pipe, heat trace cable wraps around the pipe and provides a small amount of continuous heat to keep the pipe above freezing. The best time to insulate exposed pipes is before cold weather arrives, not during a freeze event or right after one. Scheduling pipe insulation in early fall gives us access to the pipes under normal conditions and allows any needed repairs to be made before temperatures drop.
